A Logo and branding overview

Logo design and branding is a discipline that I get involved with from time to time. I must say I enjoy the challenge the more and more and it’s very rewarding to see your logos and branding on letterheads, vans and printed literature.

It’s always a tricky discipline to deal with I find as there are so many ways logo and branding can be defined. Is it just a type face or a motif or both? Does it need to reduce to a tiny size for use on small ads or be simple enough to print on a cigarette lighter clearly? The client often doesn’t know and needs some guidance.

It’s hard to justify the costs on a logo design that appears only to be a carefully chosen font that’s been subtly edited as vector artwork but this often works best.

Some logos require illustration because of the market they are appealing to. We’ve all seen hotel logos with beautiful line drawings of an oak beamed Elizabethan building or a farm logo with a plough and horses with a rising sun in the background. Great! But useless if you want to print it 5mm wide on bog paper in your local paper.

All the different styles are relevant and as long as they suit the client’s business and are reasonably memorable…job done!
